Newspaper Regulation
Newspaper regulation: blog tasks
Task One: Media Magazine article and questions
Read the Media Magazine article: From Local Press to National Regulator in MM56 (p55). You'll find the article in our Media Magazine archive here. Once you've read the article, answer the following questions:
1) Keith Perch used to edit the Leicester Mercury. How many staff did it have at its peak and where does Perch see the paper in 10 years' time?
130 Staff members. Whether it's in print it's going to be' highly expensive, monthly and with a limited circulation' or online it'll fail to make money and only hire 5/6 members of staff.
2) How does Perch view the phone hacking scandal?
Perch said' A small part of the press acted in a completely inappropriate fashion, but it should have been done legally. I don't think legislation is the solution.' indicating he sees the conclusions taken from the phone hacking case as being inadequate for the situation and potentially contributing to more damage than good for the newspaper industry.
3) What does IPSO stand for and how does it work?
Independ press standard organisation. This operates by reviewing a report and ordering corrections and apologies to be posted on a particular website if there are any misjustices or misdemeanours.
4) What is Perch's view of newspaper ownership?
He does not see any problem with the very few owners like the Murdochs in the industry's monopolisation. He says people have control and they have the option of reading' The Sun' or' The Guardian' and the proliferation of politically oriented newspapers does not impact readership.
5) Do you agree with his view that broadcast news should have less regulation so that TV channels can support particular political parties or people?
Definitely not. I agree that television news and print news should be monitored to ensure that the news is delivered in such a way as to restrict the amount of political impact a text may have. As Gerbner argues, heavy use will affect the behaviours and attitudes of others, and this is something that I feel is unavoidable in the digital age.
