Paul Gilroy - blog task

Go to our Media Factsheet archive on the Media Shared drive and open Factsheet 170: Gilroy – Ethnicity and Postcolonial Theory. Our Media Factsheet archive is on the Media Shared drive: M:\Resources\A Level\Media Factsheets

Read the Factsheet and complete the following questions/tasks:

1) How does Gilroy suggest racial identities are constructed?

Gilroys believes that racial identity is constructed because of history e.g. slavery

2) What does Gilroy suggest regarding the causes and history of racism?

Gilroy suggests that racism is not caused by race but racism causes race and that racial identity are caused by conflicts in history which therefore bought different groups into opposing other groups.

3) What is ethnic absolutism and why is Gilroy opposed to it?

It is the line of thinking that sees people as part of different ethnic groups, with ethnicity on the basis of distinction between individuals. He is opposed to racial absolutism because it counteracts his race-causing discrimination claim.

4) How does Gilroy view diasporic identity?
He considers diasporic identity transatlantic. That's the notion that cultural practises are exchanged by communities across the Atlantic. He sees black identities as a result of migration-the diasporic culture of Africa is based on historical paths, not origins of origin-diaspora that can not be erased / reversed.

5) What did Gilroy suggest was the dominant representation of black Britons in the 1980s (when the Voice newspaper was first launched)?
To accept the role of slavery into the cultural identities of Britain would be to challenge the role of black Britons at the time and reverse the "external and estranged" relationship with the nation.

6) Gilroy argues diaspora challenges national ideologies. What are some of the negative effects of this?
On the other hand, negative experiences of exclusion, exposure to regressive ideologies and marginalisation will also create an identity which is then shared within the diasporic community and perhaps from the origin country.

7) Complete the first activity on page 3: How might diasporic communities use the media to stay connected to their cultural identity? E.g. digital media - offer specific examples.
The diasporic communities use the media to stay connected in order to stay in touch with culture using social media and get to know family history.

8) Why does Gilroy suggest slavery is important in diasporic identity?

He suggests slavery is important as the effects of history had long lasting effects in today society with left a mark in politics and socially

9) How might representations in the media reinforce the idea of ‘double consciousness’ for black people in the UK or US?

Black people in the UK and US have been represented negatively as they are presented to be aggressive

10) Finally, complete the second activity on page 3: Watch the trailer for Hidden Figures and discuss how the film attempts to challenge ‘double consciousness’ and the stereotypical representation of black American women.

Media presents black woman as independent and intelligent women, and that they are not aggressive and uneducated which subverts to dominant stereotypes of black woman
