LR Men's Health and Oh Comely

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential)

www: attempts to incorporate and apply theory throughout
ebi: lacks specific examples/details
: Needs more understanding of the text (csp) and theory (q2)

2) Focusing on the BBC Life Hacks question, write three ways it helps to fulfil the BBC's mission statement that you didn't include in your original assessment answer. Use the mark scheme for ideas.
  • BBC's mission statement is to inform, educate and entertain.
  • BBC tries to inform the audience by talking about gender
  • BBC tries to educate the audience by talking about topics which will benefit and advise the audience to do
  • BBC tries to entertain the audience by allowing other voices to be heard creating personal relationship between the audience and the writer.

3) Question two asked you how useful media effects theories are in understanding the audience response to War of the Worlds. Complete the following:
  • Gerbner's Cultivation theory: useful or not useful? Why?

  • Gerbner's theory of cultivation implies that if an audience intakes a lot of the media this can lead to the audience being influenced by the attitudes of people.
  • Furthermore i believe this theory is useful to an extent but can be flawed as it states that audience are passive and submissive and are quick to believe what the media has to say.
  • On the other hand, it was aired straight after the War whereby making it less typical for the media create this techno panic

  • Frankfurt School's Hypodermic Needle model: useful or not useful? Why?

  • This theory states that the audience are completely passive and believe every
  • information portrayed in the media.
  • This theory is not as useful as, for example Gerbners Cultivation Theory, because it is believed that the the radio had exaggerated the story in order to create an unease for the audience. Due to radio being a new technology, we may argue that it is understandable why World of War easily created that techno-panic. Furthermore there were examples of phone calls whereby reinforcing the ideologies.
  • Links to ' Mean World Disorder '  where the audience thinks that the world is way worse than it is due to the media portraying it in that way

  • Stuart Hall's Reception theory: useful or not useful? Why?

  • This theory is useful as the media wanted many audiences to be scared-and they were, though it could be said that it is being negotiated as the audiences were scared but perhaps to an unintended degree. This theory could not be useful either, as Welles intended to read is being debated and whether commenting on the dangers was all a lie
4) Write a full essay plan for the 25-mark Magazines question. The mark scheme contains plenty of ideas you can use here. Your plan should include notes/bullet points addressing the following:
Men's Health and Oh Comely have arguably both succeeded, and failed to attract audiences in the current climate of the print industry.
  • Introduction: one sentence answering the original question and laying out your argument clearly.

  3. Men's Health also offers incentives which is important for motivation. Incentives being discount codes for e.g. Protein Powder
  • Paragraph 2 content:
  • Men's health
  1. Men's Health Health is considered a mass magazine whereby the audience demographic ranges between 25-45 who are fitness orientated
  2. 1,000,000+ readers of their magazine
  3. Men's Health also has brand loyalty making the readers not a 'one time reader'.
  • Paragraph 3 content:
Oh Comely:
  1. Opposite to Men's Health making it a niche magazine.
  2. Very Liberal and left-wing
  3. As it is becoming more politicised and 'woke' it may also suffer from losing audiences
  • Paragraph 4 content:
Oh Comely:
  1. Demographic age ranges over 27+ , targeting a mature, White middle class women
  2. 25,000 readers
  • Paragraph 5 content:

  • Iceberg is niche and small which requires audience to buy their products in order to stay running.
  • However still attract the audience due to USP's, incentives etc
5) Finally, identify three key skills/topics you want to work on in A Level Media this year before the final exams in June.
