Audience Theory 2 - blog task

1) Social learning theory has been criticised for simplifying the causes of violence in society. Do you think the media is responsible for anti-social behaviour and violence?
I believe that media does not completely promote anti-social behaviour as most of the society is like Blumler and Katz who believe in the Uses and Gratifications theory which states that audience are conscious about what they intake with media. Also the social learning theory were tested on children who havent reached the mature stage of their life meaning that they are easily influenced by their role model, like Batman, showing that they should follow older people. This shows that media is not fully responsible for anti-social behaviour

2) How is social learning theory relevant in the digital age? Are young people now learning behaviour from social media and the internet? Give examples.
Social learning theory is relevant in this digital age mostly in a good way where people look at other people doing something beneficial and they try imitate it for their own good. I disagree that media is involved in teaching people anti-social behaviour this is due to the audience being conscious and mature in what they watch. If people in this digital age fall into the hypodermic needle theory, than the world will be in chaos. For example many people play the violent game CALL OF DUTY but you dont see everyone misusing weapons in public.

3) Research five examples of moral panic from the last 50 years. To what extent was the media responsible for these moral panics? Was the concern in society justified? How have things changed as a result of these moral panics?

  1. Palmdale, California - Where a 14 year old went to his former schooland began shooting a semiautomatic rifle. This is not to be blamed by the median as the boy might go through mental illnesses. Or he had a disagreement which lead to this horrific act without any conscious of the outcome
  2. Ebola- is a viral fever of humans caused by bats and due to the rapid spread of ebola in the west of Africa, the media caused racism to occur which excluded the real reason for why Ebola came about
  3. The satanic ritual abuse - it was sexual abuse of people in the context of satanic ritual

4) What examples are given of technopanics that create fear in society?
Several examples of fear appeal arguments will be offered with a particular focus on online child safety, digital privacy, and cyber security.

5) How does the author suggest that technopanics should be addressed - rather than through government regulation?

  • Experiments should be taken
  • learning from society
6) Do you think the internet should be regulated? Should the government try and control what we can access online?
I believe that we should have freedom in what we search but the government should monitor us in any disturbing searches on the Internet. For example many people search disturbing videos of Isis which could lead to an interest and maybe people joining them. We should not be worried about the government monitoring us if we dont engage in illegal activity.

7) Apply Gerbner's cultivation theory to new and digital media. Is the internet creating a fearful population? Are we becoming desensitised to online threats, trolling and abuse?
I believe in Gerbner's cultivation theory as heavy viewers of television are more susceptible to media messages and believe that they are real. This is because the more message you constantly put in an individuals mind, the more likely the person is going to imitate the action UNCONSCIOUSLY. They are exposed to more violence and therefore affected by the Mean World Syndrome.

8)Is heavy internet use something we should be worried about in society? How would you define 'heavy internet use'?
I define a heavy internet user as an individual who uses the internet for more like 5 hours a day. This heavy usage of the internet could lead to an individual being influenced by what they watch an act in a similar was unconsciously. The younger generation are more exposed as technology is improving rapidly and by the time they get old they will be addicted
